Donations keep coming for flood victims

A drop off-point for goods of all kinds is now available at Park Avenue Gifts and Paradise Tan, in the stone church on the corner of Third Street and 12th Avenue.

The goods are picked up twice a week by the RM of Coalfields to be distributed to those who have been displaced by the flooding. Valerie Pelton, acting administrator for the RM of Coalfields, said there are still about 30 people staying in trailers by the Bienfait Memorial Arena and another 40 who have evacuated homes but are staying with friends or family in Bienfait.

Pelton offered words of thanks those who have been able to contribute to the bags of goods that have gone out so far. She did a pickup last Friday and Saturday, as donations have been accumulating since around June 24.

"I'm glad to live in a community where we can help each other out," said Pelton.

The drop-off point accepts all items, new and used. Pelton noted that they have already received an "overload" of bedding.

Right now she suggested donating things that are related to camping would be great. Items like coffee makers are certainly desired.

The drop-off will be available as long as people continue to come in with goods. Throughout the summer and likely into the fall, people will be able to drop off goods, but those organizing the drop-off ask those donating to watch for the list of necessary items to change as the seasons do.

Those affected may require things like winter boots or coats once the weather turns in a few months. While they aren't looking for those items now, they may ask for them in the future.

Right now there is a specific list, though it changes regularly, of what people need. A lot of the items are toiletries or kitchenware.

If you would like to drop off an item but aren't sure if it's needed, you can call Pelton at the RM office, 306-388-2323. The list of items they are looking for is posted on some community message boards.
