It was standing room only at Estevan Motor Speedway on Friday as roughly 2,500 people showed up to take in a unique display.

A combine demolition derby, dubbed Eve of Destruction, saw 15 little-used combines of varying condition duke it out in the middle of the track.

After much smashing and bashing, and a few stray parts left on the ground, Estevan’s Ryan Berg was the last man standing.

Event organizer Davin Emmel said the massive audience came as a surprise, especially with other events going on, including a Keith Urban concert in Regina.

“I knew we were going to have a good crowd. I was a little shocked we had that many. It was excellent to see,” said the former modified driver.

“We’re going to have to get more grandstands for next year,” he chuckled. “It was a really good turnout.”

Emmel said he’d like to have a guest registry for future events to find out how many people came from out of town.

He also drove a combine during the derby.

“I didn’t have any idea what to expect. It was a lot of fun,” he said.

The evening also included a rollover contest and an exhibition from the Trackside MX motocross club, along with a calcutta for the combine event.

Members of the Estevan Bruins helped run the entrance and concession booth.

Emmel said the event was taped on SaskTel Max and will likely be aired in the next two weeks.

He said the event will probably be held again next year but may include a figure-eight trailer race rather than a combine demolition derby.
