On April 23, 2012 at 3:14 pm, members of the Canora/Sturgis RCMP Detachment responded to a two-vehicle collision at the junction of two grid roads approximately four miles northeast of Sturgis, SK.
An SUV with a lone occupant proceeded through a yield sign and was struck by a van with 4 occupants. The driver of the SUV died at the scene while the occupants of the van were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
An RCMP collision analyst is currently investigating the scene with members of the Canora/Sturgis detachment. Names are not being released pending notification of the next of kin.
Road conditions were good at the time and the cause of the collision is still under investigation.
Stabbing on Cote First Nation
On April 20 at approximately 9:45 pm, Kamsack RCMP along with Duck Mountain Ambulance were called to a residence on the Cote First Nation in regards to a stabbing. Investigation determined that a 19-year-old male had been struck with a machete. The victim was transported to the Kamsack Hospital with serious injuries.
A 14-year-old youth was arrested at the scene. The youth has been charged with several offences including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The youth has been remanded and was scheduled to appear in Youth Court in Yorkton on April 23. Yorkton Forensic Identification assisted with the investigation.
Fatal accident
On April 13, the Melville/Ituna RCMP were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle rollover near Fenwood, Saskatchewan along Highway 15. Upon arriving at the scene, Constable Jeremy Houle discovered a vehicle rolled into a slough, partially covered by water. Spectators indicted they had not checked the vehicle.
Constable Houle, with no regard for his own safety, entered the water and had to fully submerge himself in order to gain access to the vehicle. He was able to release the driver from the vehicle and carry her to the side of the road where the spectators immediately started CPR. Cst. Houle returned to the vehicle to search for any other occupants before assisting with CPR himself. The local EMS ambulance arrived and the victim was transported to St. Peter's hospital in Melville for treatment.
Unfortunately, despite all the efforts of those who assisted, the 55-year-old female driver from Fenwood, Saskatchewan succumbed to her injuries.
There is no apparent reason for the vehicle to lose control and roll into the water. The matter remains under investigation, with the assistance of the RCMP Collision Reconstructionist program, and the Saskatchewan Coroner's office. No name is being released by the RCMP.
