The Yorkdale Central Public School Royals' basketball program celebrated not one, but two city championship titles last week.

In the finale of the Yorkton Elementary Schools Sports Association (YESSA) basketball season, coach Jason Boyda and president Mark Schendel both noted that it was the same two schools playing in both categories.

Yorkdale Central Public School and MC Knoll went head-to-head in both boys' and girls' action.

Boyda's Royals went on to capture both titles late Wednesday afternoon, many hours after the last class of the day had ended.

"It was a blast," notes Boyda.

"We were done quite late," said Schendel.

"The kids were awesome," added Boyda.

"The boys games were challenges."

Boyda added credit to the strong program of the MC Knoll Knights, saying they kept it tongue-and-cheek.

"They shot well from the outside," he said. "They were more aggressive. The boys game was neck-and-neck. MC Knoll played a great game."

To commemorate both the boys' win as well as the young ladies' 'w', YCS plans to hang a banner up in the school gymnasium, explains Boyda.

He told the newspaper the girls' team is really looking forward to that.

"They blew everybody out of the water."

He said it was fun to coach.

"The girls put in a lot of time and effort. Jessica Lutz had a great game. She stood out."

When asked if it was the end of an all-around successful basketball season at YCS, Boyda had one word to offer: "Yep!"

He wishes to thank all of the staff and students, and parents of the students for being "supportive through the season".
