The Western Major Baseball League season is less than a month from the first pitch, and Mike Perry is excited by the prospect of spending the summer in the fold of the Yorkton Cardinals.
A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Perry told Yorkton This Week, the reason he joined the Yorkton Cardinals “is because I was told by my coaches at Young Harris that this was a very competitive league and it will help me get ready in life by being on my own for a summer, also I heard there is a lot of exposure to professional scouts.”
Perry said he had his start in baseball in the Annex Little league and attended East Haven High School “in which I was a senior captain on the baseball team.”
At present Perry, who plays the corners either at first or third base, is enrolled in college stateside.
“I play college ball at The University Connecticut at Avery Point, but in the fall of 2012 I will be playing at Young Harris College in Georgia on a baseball scholarship,” he said.
Perry said the current college season is a good one.
“This past season has gone very well for me so far, the team is playing well and I am just happy that I am playing a big role on this team,” he said.
Perry said one of his best assets as a player is his attitude.
“I am a very outgoing player who just loves the game of baseball,” he said.
“I work very hard on and off the field to enhance my skills and I hope to play professional ball some day.”
As for as game skills Perry said he tries to be smart on the field.
“I would say my strengths are pretty equal at every part of my game, I feel like I have an above average arm, with power to each gap and I know the game very well and don’t make many mistakes,” he said.
That said, Perry said he hopes to grow as a player during his time with the Cardinals.
“This summer I am really going to work on being consistent and going out and making no mistakes,” he offered.
“Also I want to polish up my game by getting a lot of reps of swings and groundballs and I hope to have a very enjoyable summer.”
The Cardinal season begins June with their season opener in Melville June 1, and home opener at Jubilee Park against Regina June 2.
