The Moose Mountain Trailriders will be holding their 25th Annual Trail Ride on June 9 and 10. The group began when young parents in the community decided they wanted something fun for their families to do. Their love of horses and the lessons that horses are able to teach children were the driving forces behind the creation of the group. They, therefore, decided to establish their club and later organized the first of the Annual Trail Rides that same year, 1987.
Now many of these young parents have become young grandparents. The group often has families with three generations that are now able to ride together. They have had a lot of fun over the past 25 years and enjoy putting on their annual ride open to everyone.
People from all over have attended the ride including those from Ottawa, ON and England, UK. They were able to make arrangements with friends in the area to use horses and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
For the Annual Ride they will take, at most, 75 people out. The average in attendance has been between 55 and 65. Riding during the day they then enjoy camping out in the bush, where a controlled fire is held for those attending to socialize around. “You never know who will bring out a guitar or fiddle, and there’s one fellow who usually plays the spoons.” Nora Weightman, member of the Trailriders, exclaimed.
This year they will be camped out at Saskairie, a new location as their previous spot has been too wet to ride from. Along with door prizes, a poker derby, and great food it is sure to be a lovely time for those who enjoy riding. Meals are catered by Shelley and David Slykhuis. “There is always lots of food and no one ever goes away hungry.” Weightman said. If the weather turns there will also be a large tent set up for people to take shelter.
If you would like to attend then please contact Nora Weightman to register. Early registration is until May 25, which means adults would pay $35 and children $15: meals included. While if one registers after May 25 adults will pay $45, but children remain at $15. If you do not wish to partake in the meals then registration is only $10 for adults and $5 for children.
If you find that you absolutely love the trail ride it is encouraged that you sign up for a family membership at only $10 for the year. Their monthly rides are held April into October, weather allowing. May 20 is their next monthly ride, which will be in the Saskairie area to check on trails for the big event June 9 and 10.
“We hope you will come and help us make this a memorable occasion.”
