Museum gears up for summer season

The Maidstone Museum’s annual meeting followed by the monthly meeting was held on May 21 in the Maidstone Seniors’ Centre.

Prior to the meetings members and invited volunteer guests enjoyed a delicious supper catered by Anne Reid of Pine Island Suites. Bill McGilvery chaired both meetings and Francis Petterson read and took minutes. Following an election many key positions remained the same as last year. President is Bill McGilvery, vice-president is Dorothy Schwartz, secretary is Francis Petterson and treasurer is Randy Pike.

The museum members have been busy cleaning the numerous buildings in the museum village in readiness for spring for the summer on May 31. Hours to be open will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sundays.

The Guides, Brownies and Sparks under the leadership of Cathy Utre raked and bagged leaves May 12. They chose this job as a community service and worked from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Before starting the job they were treated to a hot dog lunch provided by the museum and had an ice cream treat in the middle of the afternoon. Their next project at the museum is to provide and plant flowers around the village church. May 18, Grades 5 and 6 of the elementary school accompanied by their teachers also raked and bagged leaves and cut the grass as their community service. The help from these groups of young people is greatly appreciated.

Some shingling on the roof of some of the buildings is needed. Anyone who could donate their time for part of the day would be appreciated. Those interested in volunteering contact Bill McGilvery at 893-4078. Volunteers hope to repaint the church also this summer.

The musuem will be involved with the up coming July 1 celebration. Entertainment for all ages and especially children is planned. See you there!
