Organ donations close to home

The Parisloff family knows all too well, the need for donor cards to be signed.

Kidney disease (Alport Syndrome) has been a part of my life for many years, affecting four generations of loved ones. My immediate family has been burdened with this disease for years.

— My oldest brother fell captive to the disease and passed away at a young age.

— My youngest brother was also diagnosed with the disease and was fortunate to receive a kidney transplant. His transplant was a success for 26 years. In 2004 he passed away.

— In 1999 my nephew had a successful kidney transplant. His donor - his father. Alport Syndrome is a part of his life too.

In June 2007, my family was devastated to learn that the gene was passed on to yet another generation. At the age of 15, my grandson Bradley was diagnosed with Alport Syndrome as well. His life was consumed with dialysis for over 2 1/2 years. He was on the waiting list for a transplant.

On September 23, 2011 Bradley received the call that he had been waiting for. An angel signed his/her donor card and was a match for Bradley’s kidney. In the early morning of September 24 Bradley, along with his mom Lenora, was air transported to Edmonton where he received his “Gift of Life”. Words cannot express the gratitude my family and I have for the donor and his/her family.

Bradley will proudly wear the green t-shirt at this year’s “Give the Gift of Life” Fun Run and Walk. It represents the fact that he has received a kidney and is enjoying life to the fullest.

On behalf of myself and my family, we encourage you to sign your organ donor card and tell your family and friends of your wishes. Show your support on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at this year’s event to raise awareness for the importance of organ donation.

There is no greater gift than the “Gift of Life.” My family is aware that signing your donor card and speaking to your family and friends about your wishes truly works.

The event will be held at Yorkton, Jaycee Beach, Sunday, June 10, 2012. Registration: 9:00 am at Sacred Heart High School, 280 Gladstone Ave. N. Run/Walk: 10:30 a.m.

Take a short walk or choose a longer 4K walk (or run) OR just come out to enjoy the morning with us!

Register online or call Audrey Parisloff at 306-783-5259 for a pledge package.
