According to a report released by Statistics Canada today Saskatchewan had a 26.8 per cent decrease in EI initial and renewal claims between May 2012 and May 2011, the largest percentage decrease in the nation. There were 1,950 fewer claims during this period (seasonally adjusted). Nationally, claims decreased by 6.4 per cent.
“The strength of the Saskatchewan economy is having a positive impact on our workforce,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. “It shows there are real jobs, real opportunities for people who are currently in the province looking for work or for those who are considering moving here.”
On an unadjusted basis, EI beneficiaries dropped by 18.8 per cent in Regina and decreased by 6.0 per cent in Saskatoon between May 2012 and May last year.
Monthly, claims decreased by 11.0 per cent between April 2012 and May 2012, well ahead of the national decrease of 4.2 per cent.
“With one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada and with declining EI claims, Saskatchewan is becoming a destination of choice for job seekers,” Boyd said.
