Cards pack it in early at the AAA provincials

The Yorkton Cardinals were entered into the 2012 Junior AAA Provincial Baseball Championships over the weekend in Regina.

The team was coached by Cliff Leschyshyn, Brian Trollope and Randy Nesbitt. They played three games, winning the first game but losing the next two, falling out of Sunday’s playoffs.

Saskatoon, Southey, Weyburn, Moose Jaw and three Regina clubs were entered into the tournament.

Yorkton’s first game was against Southey and was an 11-0 win for the Cardinals. Logan Calanchie pitched the game for the Cardinals.

Their second game was a 4-3 loss against the Regina Orioles and they lost the third game by a 10-7 margin. “It was good,” offers Cardinal coach Cliff Leschyshyn.

After the 11-0 win, they played the Regina Orioles but errors and having a potential run taken away from them, did them in and they dropped a 4-3 decision.

The final game saw them play the Dodgers and it started off bad and then ended not so bad for the Cardinals.

Leschyshyn said they fell behind early by a 10-3 count then came back to within three runs but couldn’t tie the game.

He said the team could have won both games but the combination of not everybody showing up as well as three big injuries, did the Cardinals in and they went home earlier than they would have liked, noted Leschyshyn.

Calanchie, Travis Schmidt and Layne Yeske all got hurt during the game, said Leschyshyn.

There were errors committed all over the field too, he said, having trailed by a 10-3 margin at one point.
