In an emotional statement on the steps of City Hall today, James Wilson, Yorkton mayor, announced he will not seek a second term.
Wilson cited a "new opportunity" with his employer, Sasktel as the reason for what he said was a difficult decision.
"I feel my new role with Sasktel will be difficult to commit time required to properly serve the people of Yorkton as mayor," he stated.
Wilson will, however, run for election as a city councillor.
"I will work diligently for the people of Yorkton as a city councillor... and feel confident all that has been accomplished in the past three years is a reflection of my ability to lead our community on city council," he said.
In his seven-minute speech, Wilson recounted what he believes are the highlights of his term, including low taxes, business collaboration, private development, a new medical centre and the skate park among others.
He called the current council "one of the best councils in the history of Yorkton," and suggested one of the sitting councillors would soon come forward with an announcement that he or she would seek the mayor's chair.
