The AAA Yorkton Harvest Hockey Club welcomed the Battleford Stars to town for some Thanksgiving dining and the teams finished play with a 1-1 split.
The weekend saw plenty of goalscoring from both clubs as each team won a game by a difference of four goals.
On Saturday, the Stars skated all over the Harvest in a 4-0 win.
“We generated 3-4 scoring chances all game,” insisted head coach Jeff Odgers.
“We came into this homestead knowing we had to get some wins,” he went on.
In the re-match on Sunday afternoon, they managed to get the one win, which translates into two points in the standings; goaltender Spencer Bomboir was less than 15 minutes away from posting a shutout but Josh Bly beat him at the 14:5 7 mark of the third period.
Lynndon Pastachak scored twice for Yorkton, once in the first frame and again in the second period; Jaden Kreklewich opened the scoring from Eric Meyer and Donovon Lumb at the 15:46 mark.
Meyer scored his first as a Harvest at 14:05 of the second period from Pastachak and Ethan Bear. Corwin Stevely also was credited with his first goal with the Yorkton AAA club, a sign that should be a good omen for a team who iced several new skaters over the weekend, insists coach Odgers.
“More than that, it’s their first victory in a Harvest uniform.”
Yorkton outshot Battleford in two of the three periods but both teams wound up even by the end of the game, with each shooting 26 pucks the other way.
The win gives the Harvest their first of the season and gets them out of the basement for the time being.
The team now sits at 1-3 in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, one point below the Stars who skated to a 1-1 with Regina late last month.
The Saskatoon Contacts, Moose Jaw Generals and Regina each share a tie for top spot in the league with six points each.
Next up for Yorkton is their second homestand of the season when the Saskatoon Blazers visit for a Saturday night game and a re-match on Sunday. Saturday’s game is 7:30 p.m., while Sunday’s goes at 2 p.m. Both contests take place at the Farrell Agencies Arena.
