For the third year running, Good Spirit School Division (GSSD) and Parkland Regional College (PRC) will turn the Gallagher Centre into eastern Saskatchewan’s biggest career expo on Wednesday, November 14.
Career Explorations 2012: Your Answer 2 Bright Futures, will feature 80 booths of exhibitors including universities, trade schools, businesses and government organizations providing information to students, teachers and job-seekers.
In addition to the trade show, located in the flexi-hall, five other rooms have been added this year where presenters will conduct more in-depth half hour sessions.
Lynel Martinuk, GSSD communications coordinator, said the expo provides invaluable information, particularly to students, on everything from what industry is seeking to how to get there.
To date, more than 2,000 high school students from Yorkton and the surrounding area have pre-registered, Martinuk said. And that is only from GSSD. The board is providing bussing from the schools to give all students in its division an opportunity to participate.
Martinuk also expects a big turnout from the Catholic board, reserve schools and the general public.
But the expo is not just about pamphlets, business cards and resumes, Martinuk said. The organizers try to provide practical opportunities for attendees. For example, last year the heavy construction industry provided a simulator so career seekers could try their hand at operating a backhoe.
“It’s really neat,” Martinuk said. “The kids get that hands-on experience.”
The event is also a boon to teachers. When students have the kind of firsthand information you can only get from industry insiders, it makes educators’ guidance counseling efforts all the easier.
“We get really good feedback from teachers over the years,” Martinuk said.
Career Explorations 2012 is open to anyone who wants to attend and admission is free.
