Taekwondo club fights in Regina

Shane Varjassy (middle) won light sparring in Regina.

The Yorkton Taekwondo club participated on March 2 at the 2013 Grandmaster Kim’s Invitational Taekwondo Challenge in Regina. Kim’s Taekwondo hosted the event.

There were around 140 competitors from North Dakota, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba at this event with 11 coming from Kees Taekwondo Yorkton.

Notable performances were: Olivia Dumalski (female beginner light weight) with a Gold in sparring and silver in patterns.  This was Olivia’s first competition event.  In her sparring she outpointed her opponents by scores of 16-1 and 16-3.  In her pattern competition she beat out competitors with two more years experience than herself.

Also of Special note was most improved competitor, Clark Bazin, who radically changed his style and used the stepping skills that he has been working on in the elite training classes.  Clark easily outpointed his opponent in two matches to capture gold in Junior Black Belt heavy weight sparring.

Shane Varjassy competed in the adult Black Belt light weight division and had some great performances.  One of his opponents is a black belt from Saudi Arabia that is now training at Kim’s Taekwondo in Regina.  Shane defeated him in two separate matches to capture the gold in his first showing in the adult division.

Once again Tyler Buenneke captured a double gold performance in Pee Wee Black Belt with a strong showing in the sparring division.  He is shaping up to become a dominant competitor in his age and weight group.

This event was a tune-up for the provincial Championships that are being hosted in Yorkton on March 23rd at the Gallagher Centre in the Flexihall.
