Clayton Braybrook had his second two win night of the season at Cornerstone Raceway in the city Friday.
Braybrook started fast taking the opening race of the night with Western Willy.
Braybrook said the win came as a bit of a surprise since as trainer “I’m still figuring him out,” then adding “tonight he was strong. He was tough.”
That Willie led from start to finish was also a revelation for Braybrook.
“He’s never really showed that he could leave like that,” he said.
It did help that the wings on the truck wings were not working, so horses had to be controlled behind the imaginary gate. Braybrook drew a spot right behind the truck itself “so we just had to follow it.” That allowed Willie to get off to a fast pace, and he just maintained the position.
The second win would not come until race six where Braybrook piloted HF Zeligs Glory to top spot in the Yorkton Distributors Feature Race.
Burnt On Top for Richard Remillard was in for place money, with Garett Isman and Seahorse Run taking the show spot.
“He’s a champ,” Braybrook said of Zeligs Glory, adding with a smile “it was just time everybody else knew it.
“I just love that horse.”
Zeligs Glory had been close in recent weeks, finishing second in three of his previous five races.
In the case of Zeligs win, Braybrook piloted him from behind the field to the win. It is the way he likes to do it if things work out.
“It makes the horse feels like they’ve accomplished something,” he said, adding if a horse leads and then falls off late it is not as positive as gaining ground late, even if you come up short. Then he adds being deeper in the field before a late charge gives him a better view of the field.
“I prefer to be able to see my enemies,” he said flashing another grin.
Brian Gray also had a pair of wins including the Grain Millers Canada Feature Race with Rain Gauge over Donald Tracey and Just A Mark, and Shawn Worthen with Kesons Dahlia.
Gray also captured the TD Canada Trust Feature Race with Ms Julia Rose over Hugh Woods with Merlins Magicmaker and Worthen with Ink Blink.
Isman won the fourth feature of the night, taking M L Lightning Blvd to its second straight win in the R Miller’s Plumbing Heating & Electrical Ltd. sponsored race. David Cameron and Art For The Heart was second, and Gray with Maid To Measure was third.
