The Yorkton Legion Track Club wrapped up their 2013 season with a trip to Calgary on July 26-28 for the Western Canadian Youth and Midget Track and Field Championships.
Only five members of the track club were invited to the high-end meet: Mikaila Ortynsky, Ethan Field, Jaret Porte, Cole Burkholder and Jaden Porte.
Ortynsky, who finished seventh in shot put, fifth in discus and sixth in javelin, was thoroughly impressed with how the meet went.
“The Tri-Province meet was amazing,” she said. “The meet itself was organized amazingly and my competitors were extremely strong in all of their events. Though I didn’t throw any new PBs I’ve gotten much valuable experience that’ll need for the next track season.”
Buckholder took part in four events, finishing eighth in 800m, ninth in the 1,200m, fifth in the 2,000m and fifth in the medley relay.
“It was a great opportunity for me to show my talents at a very high-end meet,” said Buckholder. “It was very hard, but I am happy I was part of it.”
Jaden Porte went into the event with vast experience in competitive track meets as he took part in the same event last year and went to Nationals in PEI in 2012. He finished seventh in the 800m, 10th in the 1,500m, ninth in high jump and fifth in the 4x400m relay.
“I was extremely impressed with the competition this year,” said Porte. “It was a great push to hit personal bests. I was also extremely happy with my results as I ran the third fastest 1,500m and fastest 800m this entire year by a youth Saskatchewan runner.”
Porte went onto add that he believes the future is just getting brighter for the track club.
“I think from the training of coach Kirk Flaman, coach Tom Cursons and coach Bob Edwards we will see more competitors from our Yorkton club attend this meet next year.”
Jaret Porte finished 16th in the 200m, 12th in the 1,200m, seventh in the 2,000m and fifth in medley relay.
Field grabbed a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100m and medley relay.
Training for the 2014 track club will start in October.
