Airport gets new name

The local airport has a new name.

The Yorkton Municipal Airport will now be known as the Yorkton Regional Airport.

Gord Shaw, Director of Planning and Engineering with the City said the name change was being recommended to better reflect the regional activity of the facility.

“The majority of flights into or out of this airport are related to the region rather than the city. Administration believes that the name, therefore, should be representative of the importance of this airport to the region,” identified a report circulate to Council.

The Report also noted “This matter was presented to the November 14, 2013, Yorkton Airport Authority. The board reviewed the request and concurred with the recommendation to change the name to reflect the regional importance of this airport.”

Councillor Larry Pearen said he was happy “to endorse and support the new name.” He added he hoped the acknowledgement of the airport’s regional importance through the change might draw more support for the facility from area municipalities.
