Lady Saints dominate in Porcupine Plain

The Lady Saints were in Porcupine Plain on Saturday, February eighth for a four team round robin tournament which also included Norquay and Preecville.

The Saints met the Norquay Nikes in the first game of the tournament. The first quarter was very close as both teams battled back and forth with the Saints grabbing a 14-13 lead going in to the second quarter.

The second quarter was much the same as strong defence on both ends kept the game close as the Saints went into half with leading 18-17.

In the third the Lady Saints put on a press and some woman-to-woman defence which resulted in Sacred Heart taking a 33-23 lead into the fourth and final quarter.

The Nikes fought hard and brought the score back to a close game with the Saints finishing with a 41-37 victory.

Tani Roussin, Morgan Shymanski and Corin Heim all had a very strong game in leading the Saints to the game one victory.

There was no rest for the wicked as the Lady Saints played the Preecville Panthers immediately after the Norquay game.

The quick turnaround meant the Saints bench players became the starters.

This game saw a slow start from both teams but it was a very hard played game up and down the court with missed shots at both ends.

After the first quarter came to an end the Saints had a 9-8 lead which they then built on as the Panthers ran into some foul trouble and the Saints took a 19-14 lead into the half.

The third quarter saw the Panthers fight back to make it a one point game at the end of the third as the Saints lead 25-24.

In the final frame the Saints kept the pressure on the Panthers as they were again in foul trouble and the Saints pulled away, taking down the Panthers 39-27.

The Saints bench players played the entire game which was a very good experience for them as they showed strong determination and some good team play.

Hailey Vitkauskas, Justine Zarowny, and Kelsey Woloschuk were leading scorers for the Saints while Kendra Varjassy had a strong game as the point guard.

Bryn Hawkins, Taylour Ringdal and Kaitlin Kitzan rounded out the players for this game.

The win gave the Saints a record of 2-0, meaning they had to face the host Porcupine Plain team in the tournament finale.

The Saints came out fast in the first quarter and when all was said and done they led 14-4.

Strong defence from Justine Zarowny on the ball and good rebounding by the forwards meant the Saints led 20-4 at halftime.

In the third quarter Morgan Shymanski set up some nice offensive plays for the Saints and made several quick break away lay-ups to pull out a 38-12 lead going into the fourth.

Hailey Vitkauskas and Kaitlin Kitzan came in a played a strong roll for the Saints as Hanna Hansen was fouled out in the fourth.

The Saints finished the game off with a couple more fast break lay-ups from Shymanski to secure a 56-27 victory.

The Saints were led by Shymanski, Heim and Roussin but really did see a nice team effort in all three games.

The Saints will host Kamsack on Tuesday and Norquay on Thursday before heading into the winter break.

Both of these games will start at 4:15 at the Halo Dome.
