Chamber reveals award finalists

The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce has revealed the finalists for its 2014 Celebrate Success Business Awards.

During a sold-out meeting at Painted Hand Casino March 13 dubbed “Countdown to Celebrate” Finalists’ Lunch, MLA Greg Ottenbreit announced the 38 names representing 31 businesses in the businesses categories and the six organizations chosen as finalists for the Community Merit Award.

RH Electric and Painted Hand Casino led the way with three nominations each. Both RH and the casino are in the running for Community Involvement and Diversity Leadership. RH’s other nomination was for Business Growth and Expansion while the casino picked up its third in the Award of Excellence category.

Juanita Polegi, executive director of the Chamber said that although the number of nominations (around 80 compared to 100 last year) was slightly down from previous years, she was impressed by the diversity of the nominations.

“We’re very pleased that those more newly established businesses have come into the option of being nominated,” she said. “It’s really exciting for them to get recognized as well.”

The list comprises small and large enterprises, corporate entities and mom and pops, historical businesses and brand new ones. For a full list of the categories and finalists see the sidebar to this article.

Polegi believes the awards can be a real boost to a business.

“I think certainly for the businesses that become finalists, it’s very important,” she said. “They get a lot of recognition through the media, through the Chamber and ultimately when they become award recipients, they get a lot of exposure as well.”

The Community Merit Award recognizes volunteer organizations. This year’s nominees are Brayden Ottenbreit Close Cuts for Cancer; Guardian Angel Pet Rescue; YAIL Harbour; Yorkton Cardinals Baseball; Yorkton Skateboard Park; and Yorkton Sno Riders.

The Small Business of the Year Award and the Large Business of the Year Award were also selected by the panel of seven independent judges from all the nominations received, but will not be revealed until the annual Awards Gala on April 2.
