The Yorkton Terriers are now ensconced in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs, but they also ended the regular season with three major individual awards coming their way.
Leading the trio was Brett Boehm earning Royal Bank Player of the Month honours.
Boehm had points in 11-of-13 games during the last month and finished with 11-goals and 12-assists overall.
The month included a four-game stretch in mid-February where he had 13-points.
He ends the regular season on a seven-game point-scoring streak and a regular season total of 31-goals and 35-assists for 66-points in 48-games played.
The award was presented to Boehm last Thursday at the Yorkton Branch of the RBC.
While stating he was obviously happy with the award, the 19-year-old forward was quick to share the honour.
Boehm said he had to thank his teammates “big time for helping me out,” adding “Without them I wouldn’t have accomplished this.”
Certainly Boehm has clicked with linemates including Tyler Giebel, Taylor Thompson and Riley Hunt.
“We have a lot of guys with a lot of skill,” noted Boehm.
In the case of Thompson, the league’s top assist man through the regular season, Boehm said he’s a huge asset to a goal scorer like himself.
“When he (Thompson) gets the puck he finds you wherever you are,” said Boehm.
Boehm’s other linemate, Hunt, joined the Terriers at the trade deadline and has stepped into the top line smoothly.
“We knew he had skills,” said Boehm. “He sees the ice so well … He’s not selfish. He keeps working hard and will get the puck to you.”
Two other Terriers earned league awards in February.
Twenty-year-old rearguard Chase Norrish had a consecutive point scoring streak of twelve games snapped at the end of the regular season but still finished with five-goals and 16-assists in just 13-games during the time period to earn SJHL Defenceman of the Month honours for the second time this season.
Norrish had a goal and six assists during a three game home stand in late February and wound up leading the league in offence amongst defencemen with nine-goals and 36-assists for 45-points in 56-games.
Kale Thomson, 20, featured in the March 9 edition of Yorkton This Week, was named the SaskTel Goaltender of the Month, also his second time on the season.
Thomson came up big in the final month of the season going 9-1-and-1 with two shutouts and a 1.72-GAA as well as a .944-SPCT.
Thomson also set an SJHL single season with eight shutouts and ended up with a 1.89-GAA overall and a league leading 31-wins. His save percentage was a sparkling .934.
