Businesses of the year

Nadine Wagner reacts to Wagner’s Flooring being named small business of the year at the Chamber of Commerce Celebrate Success Awards Gala at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cultural Centre April 2.

Yorkton’s large and small businesses of the year are R.H. Electric and Wagner’s Flooring.

The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce handed out these and nine other awards in various categories at its biennial Celebrate Success Awards gala April 2 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cultural Centre.

It is the first time in the history of the awards that the business of the year category was divided into large and small sub-categories.

R.H., along with Painted Hand Casino, had been nominated for more awards than any other business, but was shut out until the big prize at the end of the night. The casino picked up the community involvement award (for a complete list of recipients see the side bar to this story).

Nadine Wagner received the small business award on behalf of her company.

“We were all thrilled,” she said. “It takes your breath away, really.”

Wagner’s Flooring is a second-generation family-operated business run by brothers Gary and Garth and their wives Nadine and Donna that has been in the community for 43 years. Nadine said it means a lot to the family and their employees to be recognized by the community and the Chamber.

“We have a great staff and we like to think when people come into our shop it’s like being invited into our home,” she said. “To receive appreciation for that is really amazing.”

The evening itself was very well attended and went off without a hitch. Juanita Polegi, executive director of the Chamber, said she was “profoundly” pleased with the success of the event.

The recipients were chosen by a panel of judges who poured through more than 80 nominations to come up with a shortlist in each category. The businesses of the year were chosen from among all of the nominations.

Polegi said part of the excitement of the gala is that nobody knows who will be making the trip up to the podium.

“There’s only a couple of us who know who the award recipients are,” she said. “It helps when everybody is in suspense.”
