Contractor charged with arson attempt

Police and firefighters respond to an attemped arson call April 8.

A 54-year-old Peace River, Alberta man is facing attempted arson charges in Yorkton.

On April 8, in the early afternoon, Hyun Wook Shin allegedly marched into the new medical office under construction on Gladstone Avenue South, where he was a contractor, uttering threats to cause property damage.

According to the fire department he proceeded to spread approximately 12 litres of gasoline around and attempted to light it.

Other workers, who were on the scene, left the premises and called 911. Police arrested the accused before he could get a fire started.

Firefighters covered the gasoline on the floor with absorbent material and instructed the building owner to remove construction materials that had been contaminated.

Shin was held in custody overnight and appeared in Yorkton Provincial Court April 9 on three charges, attempted arson, uttering threats to cause property damage and mischief causing property damage.

Following a brief hearing last Wednesday, he was released on $250 bail and standard conditions plus having to return to Alberta and not return to Yorkton until his next court date on May 21.
