Sacred Heart High School medalists in the Skills Canada provincial skills competition celebrate their achievements in Prince Albert.

Yorkton’s high schools represented the city well at the provincial Skills Canada competition at Prince Albert April 10 and 11 bringing home a total of 13 medals, three gold, four silver and six bronze.

It is no surprise that Yorkton Regional High School dominated the robotics category as it has provincially and nationally for the past three years.

The team of Brayden Miller, Josh Tysowski, Drew Bulitz and Carter Park took the gold in robotics. A second team from YRHS won silver (for a full list of medal winners see side bar to this article).

The two other gold medals went to Amy Huang of YRHS in creative braiding and Sacred Heart High School’s Raya Tolentino for 3D animation.

Skills Canada is an opportunity for students to compete in a wide variety of trades and technology fields, but it goes beyond just showcasing what they have learned in high school, said Curtis Moen, the skills coordinator for SHHS.

“For some students the competition allows them the opportunity to see post-secondary options and allows them to learn more within their chosen area,” he said.

Moen said getting ready for the competition is a grueling process for all students and is deserving of recognition.

“I would like to congratulate the entire Saints skills team for all the time they put into preparing for the competition,” he said.

Aside from the medals, one Regional student was named to a very special honour. Bo Chiasson will be going to Beijing, China in May to represent Canada at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) youth conference.

The Grade 12 student, who won silver for robotics in the provincials is a former national champion who, along with Jayden Leister, won gold at the 2013 Americas competition in Brazil and represented Canada at the World championship in Germany coming in ninth place.
