The City of Yorkton has been approved for a rental construction incentive program grant for 2015.

“In continuation to the City’s efforts to increase the number of rental housing units in Yorkton, an application was made to the Ministry of Social Services, Government of Saskatchewan for the Rental Construction Incentive (RCI) Program,” detailed a report circulated to the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.

The Ministry of Social Services has approved a grant, to be matched by the city, in the amount of $83,363.

Gord Shaw, Director, Planning & Engineering, explained the process to access the grant was initiated by the City as far back as 2009, with the RCI Program actually starting fund allocations in 2011.

“The funding can be used to support two existing rental housing projects in Yorkton, i.e. 29 units at 44 Allanbrooke Drive and 9 – 11 units of Fromm Manor (see related Fromm Manor story this issue),” said Shaw.

The purpose of the grant is to match the municipality’s contributions to developers of purpose-built rental housing, to a maximum of $5,000 per unit.
