CROP CHECKUP: Stripe rust confirmed in southern Alberta

Winter and spring wheat growers advised to scout for the disease

Alberta's Bugs.R.Us pest and disease alert service on July 15 reported that plant pathologist Dr. Denis Gaudet of AAFC has found  a two per cent incidence of stripe rust in the Coaldale area. This was the first confirmed case in the survey thus far, but the survey actively continues  for stripe rust all across the south.   "We wanted to alert wheat producers (especially winter wheat growers, and those growing susceptible spring wheat varieties) to get out and actively scout for the disease and be ready to spray if they find it," the report said.

Gaudet will issue an up-to-date list of resistance status in spring wheat varieties next week, the report said.
