Polish medal hope Maja Wloszczowska will skip Olympic road race after injury

WARSAW, Poland - Polish road cyclist and medal hopeful Maja Wloszczowska will skip the London Olympics because of a foot injury.

Her doctor Krzysztof Ficek said Monday that medical tests in Poland showed that the 2010 world champion and Beijing silver medallist had two broken bones and torn tendons in her right foot,.

He said the injuries made it impossible for Wloszczowska to take part in the Olympics, which open on Friday. The women's race is scheduled for Aug. 11.

Wloszczowska said that "unfortunately I will not be able to fulfil my dream" of competing for an Olympic medal in London. She said it would be a "miracle" if she was able to compete at all this year.

The 28-year-old cyclist injured her right foot on Friday during training in Livigno, Italy.
