Workers at fertilizer giant PotashCorp's largest potash mine have been served notice for a month-long hiatus in mid-September.
Saskatoon-based PotashCorp said Thursday its mine at Lanigan, Sask., about 45 km south of Humboldt, will not operate between Sept. 15 and Oct. 13.
The decision, the company said, is "consistent with PotashCorp's practice of matching supply with market demand."
The Lanigan facility is a conventional underground mine whose annual operational capability this year sits at about 3.3 million tonnes.
The kilometre-deep mine, which produces standard, suspension and granular-grade potash for fertilizer and ag markets, had a roster of 588 employees as of 2011.
PotashCorp on Thursday also noted its Lanigan employees hit a safety milestone last Saturday of two million hours without a lost time accident.
