A tender for pathway development approved in the 2017 City of Yorkton budget was approved Monday.

“The City of Yorkton 2017 Capital Budget included pathway construction on Mayhew Avenue and Dracup Avenue. Also planned for 2017 were improvements to the Silver Heights Park, including a new outdoor rink. All of these projects were grouped together in one tender to get the best pricing possible,” explained René Richard, Director of Engineering & Asset Management, with the City at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council.

The tender was advertised on Sask Tenders from August 4, 2017 to August 18, 2017. Three bids were received.

“All three bidders met bidding criteria and all three tendered prices are within budget estimates with Fedorowich Construction Ltd. being the lowest bid. The budget estimate for the completion of work included in this tender was $534,190. Therefore, there is a potential for reallocation of the remaining $109,619 to a future pathways project such as Darlington Street East which will likely be proposed in the 2018 Capital Budget,” said Richard.

“Not all the work will be completed in 2017. The pathway along Mayhew Avenue from Langrill Dive existing to York Road, the pathway along Dracup Avenue from Broadway Street to Smith Street and the outdoor rink at Silver Heights Park is expected to be completed in 2017. The pathway along Dracup Avenue from Smith Street to the Parkland College entrance and the landscaping along Dracup Avenue is expected to be completed in 2018.”

Councillor Aaron Kienle said the pathway system is clearly well-used.

“I see these pathways used a lot,” he said, adding it is good to see the system expanded.

Mayor Bob Maloney said when the pathways were initially suggested years ago he was not a supporter, but that view has long ago changed.
