Today is the day to vote in the City of Yorkton. People of the city will select the mayor and six members of council.

Polls open at 9:00 a.m. and run until 8:00 p.m. There are three polling stations in the city, the Gallagher Centre, Yorkdale Central School and the Gloria Hayden Community Centre. Kathy Ritchie, returning officer, says that residents need to double check which polling location they need to visit based on where they live.

Voters also need to bring ID to vote. The ideal option, Ritchie says, is to bring a government issued ID. If that’s not possible, residents are asked to bring two pieces of identification, both of which have their name and one with their current civic address. She notes that a water bill, for example, is something which qualifies as a piece of ID, since it has both the name and the civic address of the resident.

The advance polls saw a significant increase in turnout over the election in 2012. This year’s polls saw 861 voters cast their ballot reveals Ritchie. y. In 2012, 404 voters used the advance polls. While Ritchie says they estimate there are approximately one thousand more eligible voters this time around, it’s still a significant early turnout. In 2012 total voter turnout was about 27 per cent.
