The City of Yorkton is looking for a new director of planning and engineering.

City manager Lonnie Kaal confirmed yesterday Gord Shaw, who has been at the helm of the planning department for six years is moving on.

Kaal said Shaw was good for the city.

“He accomplished a lot in that time,” she said.

The parting of ways was an amicable one. Shaw said he wanted to be closer to his family in Edmonton, so when the opportunity arose to take over the planning and development portfolio in Lac La Biche County, Alberta he jumped.

Lac La Biche lies approximately two-and-a-half hours northeast of Edmonton.

He also felt it was a career development move. As the senior manager for planning and development, he will take on a mentorship role for a young department in a fast-growing oil and gas region.

He characterized his experience in Yorkton as “fantastic.”

“I had an opportunity to deal with a lot of important issues here,” he said. “I feel very proud of accomplishments I’ve made in my six years and I had a great administration team and a great council.”

Shaw’s last day will be September 11.

“That’s the nice thing, because it shows he cares about the place we will have the chance to have a smooth transition,” she said.

Kaal is confident the City will be able to fill the position in the allotted time, but would not say whether there was someone in line internally.
