Sentenced

A 22-year-old Churchbridge man will spend an additional 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Rose was arrested in October 2015 following a traffic stop during which police discovered he was in possession of marijuana. While in cells, police noted the suspect fiddling around with his clothing. A subsequent search revealed 135 grams of cocaine concealed in his underwear.

In a joint submission, the Crown and defence recommended a 30-month custodial sentence. Prosecutor Shane Wagner cited the amount of the drug as an aggravating factor, but considdered Rose’s age and lack of related criminal record as mitigating.

“That’s actually quite low in the range for the amount of drugs,” Wagner said.

Judge Patrick Reis gave Rose time-and-a-half credit for the six months he spent on remand.

In addition, Rose will be prohibited from possessing firearms for 10 years once released and must provide a sample of his DNA.
