Making it to 50 is a milestone worth celebrating. Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s School of Nursing is a year away from its 50th Anniversary Celebrations and the countdown to next year’s festivities has begun.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic has been a leader in nursing education for registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, registered nurse/nurse practitioners and licensed practical nurses since 1967, when the first diploma program launched in Saskatoon.

“In 2017, the School of Nursing will celebrate 50 years of quality nursing education at Sask Polytech,” says Dr. Netha Dyck, dean, School of Nursing. “The festivities will provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our current students, graduates, faculty and staff as well as honour the pioneering efforts of our alumni in advancing nursing education, research and scholarly work.”

Cindy Smith, associate dean, and chair of the school’s 50th anniversary activities, says planning for events, key initiatives and celebrations have begun. A highlight of the celebrations will be establishing a 50th anniversary Trust Fund for nursing students.

“By taking care of our future students, we are also honouring our rich history of student success,” says Smith. “By establishing a trust fund we are creating a legacy based on supporting scholarships and bursaries for future generations of students enrolled in School of Nursing programs.”

Some events being planned for are campus tours, keynote speakers and banquet events in both Saskatoon and Regina.

Dates for next year’s campus celebrations are:

• April 21, 2017 Prince Albert Campus

• April 28 & 29, 2017 Regina Campus

• May 12 & 13, 2017 Saskatoon Campus
