Sunrise Health Region is now offering echocardiography services at Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Echocardiography uses ultrasound technology to create images of the heart.

The echocardiograms will be interpreted by a team of cardiologists, in partnership with Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region; this will improve continuity of care to patients, as many are referred to the cardiologists in Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. Being able to have the test completed in Yorkton means that the cardiologists in Regina can receive information on the findings and possible disease progression sooner, in advance of their appointment with clients from Sunrise Health Region.

The addition of this service has much to do with the client-centred thinking of Sunrise Health Region employee Kyleigh Williams. Williams expressed an interest in undergoing the training to become a Cardiac Sonographer. “Working in cardiac diagnostics, I recognized the need for the service in our region,” said Williams. “I wanted to become trained so that we could offer this service locally to our clients who would otherwise have to travel to Regina or Saskatoon.”

Decreased wait times and elimination of long-distance travel for testing are just two of the benefits of this local service. Dr. Phillip Fourie, Senior Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Services and Dr. Rodney Zimmermann, Cardiologist with Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, worked diligently with both health regions to make the service available.

“I am extremely pleased that echocardiography is available in our region and want to give kudos to our team of employees, physicians and volunteers who worked very hard to make this service a reality,” said Suann Laurent, President and CEO. “The ability to provide this service regionally to our residents helps us continue our goals to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”

Patients can access echocardiography services as needed in consultation with their physician.
