Yorkton 1946

Collection John Maluga.

This photo shows you the snow conditions that are described in last week’s History Corner story by Wilmar Shingoose. The picture dated December 26, 1946 was taken on the Canadian National Railway line south of Yorkton and gives you an idea of the amount of snowfall that had crippled the trains and life in the countryside in general. Trains were stuck for weeks in some places. Roads all over Saskatchewan were completely plugged up. No mail got through for several weeks. Some places had no outside contacts except by phone. Snow removal was hard work for days and weeks. Farms in more remote places waited for first thaw to drive the country roads into the towns. Source: John Maluga Fonds
