International Harvester Building

The International Harvester building seen here, erected in 1911 was located at 365 Broadway Street West (west of the Parker Quine building). It served as a warehouse and showroom of farm equipment and International Harvester trucks. The Company closed its location in November of 1961. Macleods Store purchased the building in 1962 and converted it to a department store until it closed in 1985.

The warehouse was constructed near the tracks of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian National Railway for the convenience of loading and unloading heavy duty merchandise. The building was erected with bricks supplied by the brick plant of H.S. Stephens at Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. When it was demolished in 1993, and bricks were put up for sale. The sample seen here was donated by Bob and Pauline Cunningham who had purchased several bricks to use for décor on their acreage. The initials “H.S.” on the brick  represents the company name.

(One Web site incorrectly states that this warehouse was constructed with Doukhobor brick. We have been assured that this error will be corrected.)
