I've had my garage sale, now what?

Anyone who's ever had a garage sale knows that you don't often end up completely sold out at the end of the day. There are always bits and bobs, books, toys and other garage sale gems overlooked by shoppers.

Irene Baran, store manager and Bev Kelts 20-year employee at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, pictured above, stand in front of a mountain of textiles bagged up and ready to be moved out. The pair says they are in need of 'strong' volunteers who can spare 3 or 4 hours to help load the textiles for shipping. Anyone interested in lending a hand can contact Irene at (306) 783-4640.

Anyone who's ever had a garage sale knows that you don't often end up completely sold out at the end of the day. There are always bits and bobs, books, toys and other garage sale gems overlooked by shoppers. Rather than recycling unwanted items, sending them to the landfill or lugging them back into the house, consider donating these left over items to help others give more.

The Salvation Army Thrift store accepts donations of good condition clothing, house wares, books and toys. Items can be dropped off any time in the bin located behind the store on Betts Street.

Proceeds from the sale of items in the store stay in Yorkton and are used to support family services through The Salvation Army, which include providing clothing and household items to victims of disaster.

Textiles that are torn, stained, have missing buttons or are otherwise unusable in the store, are sorted and bagged and eventually shipped to Africa where they are used by people in need there.

Value Village accepts donations of clothing and textiles, house wares, books, toys, furniture, electronics and countless other things. All donated items are weighed, sorted and most ends up for sale at the store. Anything unusable here is shipped to developing countries.

"We don't accept flammable things or any dangerous goods, or puppies," jokes store manager John Potter. "Believe it or not someone tried to drop one off here last week," he adds.

Yorkton Value Village supports the Canadian Diabetes Foundation and the Saskatchewan Institute for Community Living with financial contributions based on the per-pound weight of all items donated.

A community donation centre is located behind the store where items can be dropped off Monday to Saturday, between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. or on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
