The week of May 7-13 has been proclaimed Pride Week in Yorkton.
To assist with this visibility and to help raise awareness and education the Saskatchewan Pride Network would like to request a proclamation that May 7th through 13th inclusive be designated as “Yorkton Pride Week” to celebrate inclusivity and diversity that exists in the City of Yorkton, explained Laura Budd, Education Coordinator Moose Jaw Pride / Saskatchewan Pride Network in a presentation to the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.
“The Saskatchewan Pride Network is a provincial wide initiative of Moose Jaw Pride. Moose Jaw Pride is a non-profit organization that is providing support and education to individuals who identify as Gender or Sexually diverse (GSD). Our goal is to work towards creating a safer more welcoming community for all people in Yorkton, where individuals are able to express themselves freely. In order to send the message that the City of Yorkton is an inclusive and welcoming community to all we at the Saskatchewan Pride Network realize that public acceptance starts with visibility,” detailed a letter circulated to Council.
As part of the designation approved unanimously by Council the Rainbow Pride Flag be raised at City Hall at a formal flag raising ceremony on Monday May 8th, 2017 at 12:15 p.m..
A number of events are planned for the week including disc golf at Patrick Park at 5 p.m., May 10, with pizza and board games to follow at 6:30 at St. Andrew’s United Church.
A Pride Youth Coffee and Social will be held Thursday, May 11 at 7 p.m. at the Yorkton Boys and Girls Club.
Saturday, May 13 there will be a Pride March starting at 12:15 p.m. at City Hall, and ending at Western Financial Group City Centre Park where hotdogs and a beverage will be available for $5.
