Sacred Heat High School has been honoured nationally for its 2015-2016 yearbook.

Jostens, the biggest manufacturer of school yearbooks and other institutional memorabilia in North America, recognized the local effort in its 2016 National Yearbook Program of Excellence.

“Ben Fetsch, our editor, along with the other team members put in countless hours making sure this yearbook represents the entire student body - and they did a great job,” said Susan Barton, the project’s teacher advisor. “The school is very proud of them.”

The company uses three criteria to judge the entries. First, the book must be meaningful to all students and include the vast majority of the students.

Secondly, the school must make the utmost effort to ensure all students receive a book.

Finally, the project must be managed effectively meeting deadlines for production, printing and distribution.

The SHHS group accomplished those goals by focusing on students Fetsch explained.

“Our goal was to have this yearbook represent the students of SHHS,” he said. “From hashtags to layouts, we tried to represent them the best we could.”

Barton noted a nod to modernity also placed a role.

“To bring yearbooks into the 21st century, the team chose a social media theme where hashtags were placed throughout the book to represent student feelings, events and thoughts,” Barton explained. “There are several aspects of this yearbook that make it stand out, one of the most important being that every student enrolled at SHHS is in this yearbook at least three times.”

Sacred Heart was one of 14 Canadian schools represented in the winning group. Esterhazy High School was the other Saskatchewan honouree.

In addition to the Saskatchewan winners, seven B.C. schools, three from Calgary and two from Ontario received banners.
