Construction to bring Yorkton’s old casino building on Third Avenue up to code and develop commercial space has kicked into high gear.

Four Horses Development, the Sakimay First Nation’s economic development arm, which owns the building, envisions a modern facility with restaurants, retail spaces and medical offices.

Pat Fiacco, Four Horses CEO, said they have not signed any tenants as yet, but they are actively recruiting and in discussion with several potential businesses.

“We want to make sure it fits the needs of the community,” he said. “A nice restaurant at that corner as an anchor would be fantastic.”

Mayor Bob Maloney, whose office is right across the street thinks it is a much needed revitalization in the heart of the downtown core.

“I think it is outstanding that Sakimay is investing in the property and going to get some people in there, hopefully in retail,” Maloney said, noting he believes it will serve potential tenants admirably.

“I talked to Bruce Thurston,” the mayor said. “Bruce worked at the Co-op for many years—that was our old Co-op store—and he says the bones of that building are terrific; he said it was built like a fort.”

There is not a solid deadline for when businesses will be able to start moving in, but Fiacco said he would be in Yorkton in the fall to give an update at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon
