Teenager killed in 'freak accident'

The Melville/Ituna RCMP report the tragic death of a 17-year-old youth on a farm near Melville, Saskatchewan. On Saturday, November 12 in the afternoon, the youth was assisting family members in sawing firewood when the saw malfunctioned.

The Melville/Ituna RCMP report the tragic death of a 17-year-old youth on a farm near Melville, Saskatchewan.

On Saturday, November 12 in the afternoon, the youth was assisting family members in sawing firewood when the saw malfunctioned. The flywheel on the mandrel saw that was being used broke apart and struck the young man causing injuries to his head and leg. He was taken to St. Peter's hospital in Melville, then transferred to the Regina General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The accident was investigated by the Melville/Ituna RCMP Detachment and the Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety department. The investigations have been concluded as another tragic "freak accident" that has struck in Saskatchewan over the last few days.

A flywheel is a cast iron steel wheel (approximately 50-75 lbs in weight) that keeps the momentum of the saw blade turning. In this instance the flywheel broke apart into several pieces while spinning at high speeds. At the request of the family, the name of the youth has not been released.


The Kamsack RCMP are seeking the public's assistance in locating a missing 15-year-old male.

Douglas McKay was last seen at the Pi-Kiwek Cote Group Home on November 15 at 6:00 am. Once notified, RCMP attended the group home to gather information on Douglas. Workers at the home advised that it appeared that Douglas had planned to be away for a while as he had packed all of his belongings and taken them with him. Extensive patrols and inquiries were made in the Kamsack area with no results.

Douglas has ties to Regina and the Rolling River First Nation in Manitoba.

Douglas is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, 165 pounds, medium build, short black hair, of aboriginal decent and wears glasses. Workers were unable to provide a description of the clothing that he was wearing.

Yorkton Municipal RCMP are currently investigating a collision that happened on the morning of November 16 at the intersection of Lawrence and Broadway in Yorkton. The collision involved a semi carrying wheat that was westbound on Broadway Avenue and a school bus that was at the intersection. The investigation is still ongoing to determine how the collision occurred, but the bus suffered damage to the front end and the semi had some damage to the trailer. Road conditions at the time of the collision were good.

The female driver of the bus was taken to hospital with minor injuries and the lone child that was a passenger on the bus was not hurt. The male driver of the semi was not injured.
