The Yorkton-Melville riding will be represented in the Official Opposition shadow cabinet of interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose.

Cathay Wagantall, who won the constituency handily in last month’s general election will serve as deputy critic for Veterans Affairs.

Ambrose made the appointment Friday when she unveiled the 32-member shadow cabinet.

“I am honoured to be given this responsibility by our leader, and I look forward to working with my colleague, Veterans Affairs Critic, MP Alupa Clarke,” Wagantall said. “Together, we will hold the government’s feet to the fire on all issues affecting Canada’s Veterans.”

Like Wagantall, Clarke is a first time MP, who represents the riding of Beauport-Limoilou, a Quebec City riding. The 29-year-old defeated the NDP incumbent Raymond Coté by approximately 2,600 votes. It was one of the few pickups for the Conservatives in the Liberal juggernaut that swept the country October 19.

Wagantall was last in the riding two weeks ago. While here she attended the Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day banquet November 11.

“At that time I told them they have my deepest gratitude, my prayers, my heart and my ear,” Wagantall said. “I am looking forward to fulfilling that commitment as deputy critic for Veterans Affairs.”
