Rose Gillis

Mrs. Rose Gillis, beloved wife of the late Alex Gillis, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Yorkton District Nursing Home, at the age of 93 years. Rose was born on April 5, 1922 on the family farm in the Jedburgh district. She was the youngest of eight children born to John and Apolina (nee Paulust) Tataryn. She received her education at Nanton School and in 1946 she left for Toronto in search of employment. There she found employment with Regal Stationery, where she worked as a supervisor for 15 years. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Alex in 1947. They were married on July 15, 1956 and continued to live in Toronto until their retirement. In 1982 they moved to Yorkton to be closer to family and also for health reasons, due to Rose's asthma and allergies. After moving to Yorkton, they spent many happy hours playing cards with friends, fishing and enjoyed taking scenic drives out in the country. Alex also enjoyed tending to his yard and garden, in which he took great pride. They were faithful members of Christ the King Roman Catholic Church in Toronto and also St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton. Rose was a member of CWL and spent many happy hours helping at the hall for various functions. She made many friends over the years and always lent a helping hand without hesitation. One of her proudest and greatest accomplishments was learning how to drive after Alex's passing. This gave her freedom and independence to come and go as she pleased. Rose was predeceased by her parents, John and Apolina Tataryn, her husband Alex on October 27, 1991, her sister Ann Kowalyk (1991), her brother Pete Tataryn (1998), her sister Josephine Spilchak (1999) and her sister Sophie Chupa (2003) and Mary Zahayko (2011). She leaves to mourn her passing and to celebrate her life, her sisters Kay Dobko and Eva Signarowski, also numerous nieces, nephews, neighbours and many good friends. Prayers were held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 and the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Francis Hengen as the Celebrant. The pianist, Lorraine Lysak led members of St. Gerard's choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Amazing Grace", "Isaiah 49", "On Eagles Wings" Psalm 23, "Song of Angels" and "Song of Farewell". The reader was Diane Olech and the cross bearer was Debbie Hayward. Members of the CWL participated in an honour guard. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Roman Spilchak, Barry Signarowski, Lonnie Chupa, Clarence Schmidt, Arnold Signarowski and Orest Machusek serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Rose may be made to St. Gerard's Church Memorial Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family atwww.baileysfuneralhome.com.
