Steve Hryhoriw

Steve Hryhoriw, beloved husband of Yvonne Hryhoriw of Yorkton and formerly of the Canora District, passed away at the Regina General Hospital, on January 8, 2015 at the age of 79 years. Steve was born on March 15, 1935, near Canora, SK, the tenth of seventeen children born to Metro and Mary (Yablonski) Hryhoriw. He grew up on his parents' busy farm and went to the one-room schoolhouse on the corner of their home quarter. When his school years were completed, Steve worked for a plumber in Canora, then moved to Regina and became an orderly at the Grey Nuns' Hospital in Regina. It was there he met Yvonne Herauf, a nurse at the hospital. They were married on July 18, 1959 and continued to live in Regina. Steve and Yvonne moved to Canora in 1962, and three years later started a dairy farm on the same home quarter where Steve grew up. They operated the dairy for the next 29 years, and then raised beef cattle for another 10 years before retiring from farming in 2004. They continued to live on the farm until 2008 when they moved to the Fairview Arms seniors' condominium in Yorkton, SK. Over the years, Steve and Yvonne had eight children - five sons and three daughters - and thirteen grandchildren. Steve loved farming and worked very hard to provide for his family. It seemed he could do just about everything, from mechanics to carpentry to electrical and plumbing to veterinary care. While work on the dairy farm was never done, he was never too busy to help a friend in need and always made time for the many good neighbours and relatives who frequented the farm. These social gatherings, card nights, birthdays and anniversaries were especially cherished by Steve, and he always felt blessed to have a home that rang with laughter from people having fun and enjoying one another's company. Most of all, Steve loved his family. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who left so many great stories and fond memories.  His kind heart, gentle nature and terrific sense of humour will especially be missed. Steve is predeceased by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.  He is lovingly remembered by his wife Yvonne; daughters: Nancy, Sue (Dennis) and Sandy (Jeff); sons: Tim (Linda), Kevin, Glen (Kim), Greg (Jenny) and Jeff; and grandchildren: Katie, Dylan, Savanah, Jessie, Steven, Dustin, Adam, Jake, Ryan, Becka, Tessa, Layne and Henry; as well as numerous brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 10:30 am from Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Canora with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac as Celebrant. Rite of Committal followed at the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church Building Fund as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Steve Hryhoriw. Family and friends unable to attend are invited to sign an on-line guest book for Steve at www.lesonsfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora.
