Mr. Walter Ukrainetz of Yorkton, beloved husband of Sylvia Ukrainetz entered eternal life on July 31, 2014 at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. He was 83 years of age. Walter was born on August 26, 1930 to Karl and Gena (nee Mischie) Ukrainetz. He was the oldest of ten children and the "leader of the pack". He attended school at Echo Lake, Dunrobin, Tuffnell and graduated from St. Joseph's College in Yorkton. He received his teaching certificate from Normal School in Moose Jaw. Walter's teaching career took him to many small Saskatchewan communities like Climax, Malby, Westside, Tway, Canora, West Ebenezer, Willowbrook and Saltcoats. He taught for 35 years and retired on June 30, 1987. On July 14, 1962 Walter married Sylvia Hrehorak at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Tuffnell, SK. They made their home in Willowbrook until 1970 when they moved to Yorkton. Walter and Sylvia were blessed with four children. Walter was a member of both 4th degree and 3rd degree Knights of Columbus Councils in Yorkton. He held various executive positions on council. He also volunteered for the Heart and Stroke, Kidney and Cancer Societies and for the Salvation Army. He helped deliver meals on wheels and worked in a catering group at St. Mary's Cultural Centre. He was also a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian choir. Walter liked gardening, yard work, painting and doing minor repairs around the house. He also enjoyed helping his brothers' farm during the spring and fall work. Walter loved camping, hiking and fishing with his family and he vowed to camp at every provincial park in Saskatchewan. He loved riding his motor bike on the trails. Walter and Sylvia camped across Canada and parts of the U.S. for many years. He is predeceased by his parents Karl Ukrainetz, Gena Honeywich (nee Mischie) and Steve Honeywich as well as brothers, Ed and Stan Ukrainetz and sisters-in-law Isabel and Harriette. Walter leaves to cherish his memory his wife Sylvia; daughter Charmaine (Al) Mehling and their children Sara, Ashley and Amber of Yorkton, SK; daughter Colette (Ralph) Karapita and their sons Michael and Mitchell of Jedburgh, SK; son Robert of Grand Prairie, AB; son Justin (Alison) of Calgary, AB; sister Betty (Walter) Fedak of Foam Lake, SK; sister-in-law Joan Ukrainetz of Mission, BC; brother Victor(Yvette) of Kelowna, BC; sister Verna (Ivan) Choboter of Abbotsford, BC; brother Hank (Laureen) of Tuffnell, SK; sister-in-law Blanche White of Young, SK; brother Gerry (Henrietta) of Burnaby, BC; brother Tim of Kamloops, BC; brother Larry (Betty) of Tuffnell, SK as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers were held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. The Holy Rosary led by Knights of Columbus, Father Delaere Council and Brother Stanislaus Assembly preceded the prayers. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus and parish choir members. The cross bearer was Sara Mehling and the epistle reader was Gerry Ukrainetz. Members of Knight of Columbus Fourth Degree, Brother Stanislaus Assembly formed the honour guard. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Jeremy Fedak, Mark Fedak, Lynette Krewulak, Henry Ukrainetz, Al Mehling and Ashley Mehling serving as the casket bearers.
