Theresa Valberg

Theresa Valberg was born on April 18, 1918, the daughter of Michael and Rosela Schneider in Regina, SK.  She was the fourth child in a family of eight. She grew up on the family farm in the Leslie Area. Like many young people back then, she left school at an early age to go out working. Theresa eventually came to Churchbridge to work for Ingi and Inga Laxdal and that is where she met her future husband, Ben. They were married on April 28, 1913, in a little church in Leslie. They made their home on the farm, north of Churchbridge. Anna was their first child, followed eight years later by twin boys, Ben and Mike. Being a farmer's wife, Theresa raised chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks which supplied a good portion of the family's meat supply. She always had a big garden and each summer many sealers of vegetables and also fruit were canned. She was always making home-made pies, bread, donuts, cookies and cake. This was all done with the old wood cook stove. When it was 90 above outside, it was twice as hot in the house!  Her family often think back to those days and wonder how she did it! If someone would drop in at meal time, there was always an extra plate or two put out. Theresa always had a strong belief in her faith and loved gospel music. Even though she was nearly deaf, she could feel the beat of the music. Theresa was a very outgoing person with a compassionate side. After her husband Ben and his two brothers passed away, Theresa moved into Churchbridge and could take life easier. She became a member of the Evergreen Seniors Club and spent many hours there playing cards. She started bowling when the bowling alley opened in Langenburg, a game which was her passion, for many years. She also bowled in Esterhazy. A very independent person, Theresa didn't like asking for help. When circumstances made it so she couldn't live by herself any more, she moved into the Manor in Esterhazy and enjoyed her stay there. As health issues progressed, she was in the care home in Saltcoats and Esterhazy and then in Langenburg. She had a good sense of humour and would give anyone a hug. Theresa was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their accomplishments. Theresa was predeceased by her husband, Ben; twin sons, Ben and Mike; parents, Michael and Rosela; sisters, Katie, Mary and Rosie; infant brother, Michael; brothers-in-law, John, Levi and Harold Valberg; sister-in-law, Rose Valberg and son-in-law, Ron Sahulka.
