Stackhouse Soapbox - Pro NFL all the way

I’m going to make a lot of CFL fans mad this week, but after Sunday’s Super Bowl; I saw a number of tweets comparing the exciting game to the Grey Cup and one media member even posted a poll asking his followers to vote for which game was better.

I’m going to make a lot of CFL fans mad this week, but after Sunday’s Super Bowl; I saw a number of tweets comparing the exciting game to the Grey Cup and one media member even posted a poll asking his followers to vote for which game was better. I don’t blame the media person for doing this, but I do blame the 50 per cent who voted for the CFL. Look, I like the CFL. There’s nothing wrong with it. But, when you start to tell me that it’s on par or better than the NFL, I have to bring you to reality. It’s a different league to be sure and there is no reason why we can’t enjoy it. But, there is a reason why Tom Brady plays for New England and not the Calgary Stampeders. The best quarterback in the CFL, likely Mike Reilly, would not see an NFL field. That’s reality. Someone last week told me Ben Roethlisberger could not play in the CFL. I mean you can’t even talk to someone like that.

On CTV’s Question Period on Sunday, a Liberal MP admitted that many refugees that Canada has accepted since Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister are dealing with financial difficulties, are utilizing food banks and, generally, struggling to make ends meet. This is where I have a hard time understanding why we accept so many. If we don’t have programs in place to help these folks assimilate into society and become contributors rather than a burden, we can’t take them in as much as we’d like to. I don’t blame the refugees at all. I blame a government that has no plan.  It’s great to want to do something nice, but if you can’t afford to do it; you have to come to grips with reality. Frankly, I’d like to see Trudeau use his persuasive powers to talk to countries like Saudi Arabia into accepting a lot of these people who are finding themselves of need to resettle. They have plenty of room  and are more than capable of handling it. We’ve all seen the photos of the empty tent towns.  Remember, Canada has social problems even without accepting any new residents.

Personally, I’m not nearly as upset about Trudeau’s announcement that he’s abandoning electoral reform as most are; but once again we have an integrity issue when it comes to this man. When he campaigned, he was adamant that the 2015 election would be the last time we elected representatives based on the ‘first past the post’ system. Now, after spending scads of money (that maybe could have gone to social programs to enable us to better handle refugees), he’s proclaimed that Canadians can’t reach a consensus and, therefore, there will be no change.  Trudeau has thrown his Minister in charge of this to the wolves and has forced her to look silly in interviews by refusing to admit the Liberals broke an election promise, but instead are listening to Canadians. I want to know what Canadians did Trudeau listen to in 2015 when he was campaigning. The guy should have said he would launch a study into electoral reform instead of promising to change it.  You people who voted for Trudeau maybe don’t realize it yet, but at best, he’s misled you on balancing the budget, running deficits, phasing out the oilsands, and now electoral reform. He’s also under investigation with the language police and the ethics people for matters relating to his answering of an English question during his church basement tour as well as his vacation with the Aga Khan. Even if he’s innocent, Trudeau campaigned on telling Canadians he’d eliminate even the appearance of wrongdoing. Well, he’s the first Prime Minister to find himself under investigation. Well done.

Meanwhile, the left leaning media has made an attempt to cast a shadow over Conservative leader Rona Ambrose’s Christmas vacation, that she spent on some billionaire’s yacht. The big difference here, of course, is that Ambrose didn’t hide anything and even inquired before she accepted to make sure everything was on the up and up. Somehow, this is still news for some outlets.

The more I think about Kevin O’Leary running for Conservative leadership, the more I find myself being unable to take him seriously.  When Michael Ignatieff won the Liberal leadership, I scoffed because I felt he was, essentially, an American. O’Leary, to me, is similar. Maybe he could have a place alongside a federal leader to offer business insight; but I just don’t think he has what it takes to be a federal leader and, eventually, Prime Minister.

Will Baker is seeking an absolute discharge at his hearing this week.  That means no conditions, no supervision, and an official record of non-conviction. Indications are that Baker will get his wish. Who is Will Baker? He used to be known as Vince Li, but us taxpayers funded a  name change for him so he can get a new start on life after killing and eating another human being on a Greyhound bus nine years ago. He may live down the street from you and you do not have a right to know.

Nice persons mentions this week: Jessica Riley, Jeff Bahrey, Chris Sharpe, Shelly Kay, and Chantelle Earnshaw.
