Brett Kemp of Yorkton is one of only 66 players chosen from across Canada to represent the country at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The selected players will be divided into three teams to attend the tournament in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., from Oct. 27 to Nov. 5. Other countries competing in the tournament include Finland, Russia, Sweden, the United States and Czech Republic.

Kemp’s hockey career started in Yorkton as he climbed the ladder through minor hockey. He spent one year on the RawTec Maulers AAA midget team and is now playing for the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

With this being Kemp’s first full season in the WHL, the forward has collected five points in eight games played with the Silvertips.

In a recent article for Hockey Canada, Shawn Bullock, senior manager of hockey operations and men’s national teams for Hockey Canada, said “These are the 66 best players in the country who are, by-and-large, making their first appearance in international competition as part of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. They have been selected not only based on their current ability, but also on their potential to represent Canada at under-18 and junior competition in the coming years.”

Kemp is one of only two athletes chosen from Saskatchewan to play for Canada at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The other is Carson Focht of Regina.
