The Yorkton Wrestling Club is now offering its first ever adult wrestling class.  Sunday night kicked off the first class at the Yorkton Martial Arts Training Center.

Austin Hovrisao, who has been wrestling for well over a decade, teaches the class. He said wrestling is a great way for people to get some exercise while having fun and learning new skills.

“It’s going to be pretty laid back,” he said. “It’ll be an introduction. We’ll show them some cool stuff and hopefully they’ll stick with it.”

Although the first week only saw a handful of people, the coordinators say they are expecting more to show up in the following weeks.

“It’s going to start out small. This is a small town,” said Hovrisao. “But eventually word of mouth will get around and it will grow.”

Russell Eddy is one of the coordinators of the class. He said the idea of the adult class is to have a recreational level of sport available to people after high school. If they want to keep it at a rec level, that’s fine. But if they want to move on to competing, then that’s also an option.

“It’s a fun experience. Austin is a very high level instructor, especially considering how small Yorkton is. We’re very lucky to have a guy like him,” said Eddy. “There’s a lot of potential with the program.”

For anyone who is interested in the class Hovrisao said the doors are open and he’s not expecting any commitment right off the start. The cost is twenty dollars for a month of classes, or ten dollars per drop in session. Eddy added that the only reason for the charge is to pay for renting the mats at the Yorkton Martial Arts Training Centre. The class will be hosted every Sunday from 6-8 p.m
