Local golfer Kade Johnson continues to add his already impressive golfing resume.

The 17-year-old golfer - who has previously represented Canada internationally at tournaments in Scotland and Australia - recently accepted a partial scholarship offered to him by Southern Arkansas University, which will see him attend the Division II school for up to four years as he competes for the Muleriders golf team. “It feels good to be playing golf somewhere for university,” Johnson told Yorkton This Week. “It’s pretty exciting. It’s going to be a good time, a good experience and I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s going to be a good stepping stone to continuing my golf career, so I’m looking forward to getting going.”

Southern Arkansas wasn’t the only school interested in acquiring the talented Yorkton golfer’s services, however. According to Johnson, there were several schools pursuing the Team Saskatchewan and Team Canada member including Minot State and Missouri Southern.

However, Johnson said that Southern Arkansas always came to the top of the list when he was trying to decide where to attend. “Southern Arkansas was the best option for my golf game and for my schooling, which are both important to me,” offered Johnson, adding that the weather in Magnolia, Arkansas, was a bit of a perk s well. “I can golf all year around there because of the weather, and they’ve got a good golf team and a good coach there as well, so all of the factors kind of pointed towards Southern Arkansas.”

Johnson said that the two sides have been talking for a long time, and that it’s a bit of a relief to officially commit to Southern Arkansas and not worry about where he would be going to school next year. “We’ve been talking almost all school year, going back and forth, and it’s nice to finally put it in paper and I’m ready to go down there in the fall.”
