The Sacred Heart High School Saints senior boys’ basketball team traveled to Estevan last weekend to participate in an eight-team tournament.

With a 1-2 record, the Saints finished in fourth place at the end of the weekend.

On Friday, Feb. 10 the Saints faced Filmore and came out with a big win. The final score was 74-21.

Grady Hawkins was the top scorer of the game for the Saints with 12 points, followed by Ethan Allan with 11 points. Ethan Allan and Austin Walkington led with 10 rebounds each.

On Saturday, the Saints fell to the Weyburn Eagles 84-63.

“I would have liked to have a better game against Weyburn,” said Saints head coach Garrett Karcha. “They’re a good team and we had a great game against them in Yorkton a few weeks ago.”

Karcha said the Eagles got a lead early in the game. Although the Saints fought hard to come back, Weyburn kept extending their lead.

Saints’ leading scorer for the game was Grady Hawkins with 17, followed by Noah Clarke with 15. Clarke also led in rebounds with 11.

Next, the Saints faced Estevan in a close game that Karcha said was “neck and neck.”

Although Sacred Heart held the score for the first half of play, in the end, Estevan came out on top with a score of 89-85.

Grady Hawkins, again, led the Saints in scoring with an impressive 33 points on the board. He was followed by Noah Clarke who had 20 points. Clarke led in rebounds with 11.

“I was happy, overall, with the weekend. We would have liked to see some better results but our offense is clicking,” said Karcha. “But, our defence needs a little bit of work.”

The Saints now have a week to practice before the school break, and then they’ll co-host a home tournament with their girls’ team on March 3-4.
